When you move home, informing people of your move can either be at the front or the back of your mind. This is because there may be a lot of people to deal with. Friends, family, employers and utility providers can be some of the more relevant people and bodies to tell first.
One of the reasons that you should tell people about a property move is to ensure you get all your mail and bills sent to the right address. The last thing you want when moving home is to worry about a delay in post. You could potentially receive important documents via this method.
Telling the Post Office
You can go to your local Post Office and inform them of your move. Therefore, you can easily redirect your mail. This costs a small fee and can save you a lot of time and energy.
This means you won’t have to tell every single person or body that sends you mail. This will apply for a period of time. After which you should make sure all the relevant authorities have your new address.
Utility suppliers
Your suppliers of gas, water, and electricity will need to know that you’re moving home. This is because they will take your name off the property, and allow the new tenant to take over control. It is good to tell these suppliers of your move as soon as you can, to prevent any delays or issues from occurring. You may have to take meter readings to send to your suppliers to ensure that everything is correct and you won’t be billed for energy that you didn’t use.
Insurance providers
You will need to inform any insurance providers you have of your move. This can include home insurance, pet insurance, car insurance, etc. By ensuring that you do this, your insurance can take this into consideration and act accordingly. This can result in perhaps some fees, refunds, extra payments, and more. If you don’t inform your insurance when moving, this could potentially make your policy void, and you won’t be covered.
Vehicles
As mentioned above, you must inform your car insurance provider of your move. In addition, you must also tell the DVLA, so that you can get a new driving license with the correct address and a new logbook. This is a legal requirement, and failing to do so could result in a fine.
Local council
You must inform your local council of your move so that they can calculate your remaining council tax bill correctly. You will also need to inform the local council of your new property, so they can set up your council tax account accordingly. In addition, you also must inform the electoral register of your premises. This is so that they can maintain accurate records for your residence.
Home bills
There will be a few things to sort out in your home for your move. This can include your internet provider, phone provider, the TV licensing company, and your satellite company, if you have one. All of these providers will need to be informed so that they can either cancel your subscription/service with them, or move them over to your new address.
You may find that when researching for new deals online, you may find something more appropriate to your situation. This is common, giving you the opportunity to find a deal that is cheaper, and can make your monthly spending decrease.
This won’t apply to your TV license of course, which will remain the same as before. Additionally, you will need to contact your phone supplier if you have a landline, to sort out your number being transferred, or your new phone number.
Schools
If you have older children, you will need to tell them of your new address. This is so that they can send any necessary correspondence to the correct location, and you can be up-to-date on the school events.
Banks, medical care, dentists, etc
These bodies must be aware of your change in address, so again, the relevant correspondence can find its correct destination. Your bank will need to know where to send statements, your doctor and dentist will need to know if you are still within the radius to receive their services, and more. If you find that you’re too far away from your current medical care, it may be worth having a look around for somewhere closer to your new home.
